How to Find Content Aligned with CASAS Competencies on Ellii

January 3, 2020

Update: Oct 22, 2021

We now have CASAS Competencies Collections!

Locating CASAS Materials

Does your program use CASAS (Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System) to measure student achievement? Do your students’ pretest scores drive your curriculum? Is your class struggling with a particular CASAS competency? If so, Ellii (formerly ESL Library) is here to help!

We have recently introduced tagging for materials that match up to CASAS competencies so that you can easily find them. Using our new filter, simply type in the specific competency that your students need work on in the Search bar and a list of related lessons and resources will pop up. For example, if the majority of your students missed test items pertaining to CASAS Competency 0.1.4 (greetings, introductions, thanking, and apologizing), you can type in that tag number and your search will currently produce 12 results. (We are always adding new material, so continue checking back.) It’s that easy!

Background on CASAS

For teachers unfamiliar with CASAS, this assessment system is widely used in adult ESL programs in the United States. Schools can choose to administer a reading test, a listening test, or both for placement purposes and for measuring student progress. Because post‑test results are often a factor in determining program funding, the stakes can be quite high for all involved—administrators, instructors, and test‑takers. Fortunately, Ellii can help prepare students for the post‑test and alleviate some of the stress related to the process.

Hi Siobhan,

Yes, we do have lessons and resources that match up to Canadian Language Benchmark competencies. To find these materials on our site, type "CLB" in the Search bar. If you are using the pdf version, make sure to click on the Canadian flag so that you can see the CLB alignments in the Answer Key. Happy teaching!

Hi Livia,

Yes, you have the ability to filter content by level. Here is a great tutorial on how to filter our lessons and resources by level: https://help.ellii.com/article/56-how-to-filter-by-level

You can also choose or change your level preference that displays on the site. Here is a step-by-step tutorial on how to do so: https://help.ellii.com/article/133-how-to-choose-change-your-level-preference
Happy teaching!

Hi Shimul,

Thanks for your comment. I'm so glad you found the post useful.

Hi, Can you separate out the levels of the tests so teachers don't need to sort through the individual lessons? Ex. 81, 83, 185 etc. Otherwise it's too time consuming.
Thanks,
Terie

Hi Terie,
In the Collection, there is a Level filter for the materials. We don't list CASAS levels on our site, but we do have an equivalency scale here. I hope this helps!

We have been in communication with CASAS and they have explained that the CASAS Competencies collection is still valid; however, Math and Independent Living are not focused on anymore. They are also focusing more on the English Language Proficiency Standards so that you see them on the lesson pages. You can turn those on in your settings. We are also creating some new CASAS STEPS practice tests. Here is the first one: https://app.ellii.com/lesson/5217-reading-steps-level-a
